Bywaters upgrades safety systems on vehicle fleet

London-based recycling and waste firm Bywaters has invested in technology to improve the safety of vehicles operating across its fleet.

The company, which operates a fleet of around 50 vehicles in the capital, has installed safety technology from Sentinel Systems across half of its fleet.

Each vehicle has been fitted with four vehicle cameras which allows drivers to see the vehicles’ 360° surroundings including rear and near-side blind spots, linked to an in-cab monitor.

The vehicles have also been fitted with Sentinel’s Bike Hotspot System, which uses side-scanning sensors and cameras to alert drivers when cyclists are close to the vehicle. The system can also be set to warn the cyclist or pedestrian that the vehicle is turning left, triggered by the left-hand indicator, so that they can keep a safe distance and not undertake whilst the vehicle is moving.

Mohamed Abdurahim, logistics support manager at Bywaters, said: “We were looking to install safety systems on our vehicles for many reasons that are beneficial to our company and drivers. Having searched around for a while we were recommended Sentinel’s solutions by another company and were given the opportunity to trial the systems. We were very impressed with the quality of product and service that was offered by Sentinel and we have since installed half our fleet with its 4-way camera and Bike Hotspot cyclist safety systems.”

Last month letsrecycle.com revealed that Bywaters had been awarded a contract worth an estimated £3 million to collect and dispose of waste from the Houses of Parliament (see letsrecycle.com story).
