Bromley reports 60% participation levels in door-to-door scheme

The council delivered 112,500 recycling boxes to residents, who are now recycling 16% of their household waste.

Despite being in south-east London, Bromley takes in a large rural area. The recycling scheme will be extended there, and to blocks of flats, later this year.
Customer research suggests that some 60% of households have taken part so far in the fortnightly service.

This has resulted in an extra 120 tonnes of waste being recycled each week.
Contractor Onyx has had to expand its collection fleet from five to eight vehicles to keep up with the volume of materials.
It is testing different hired vehicles at present, and will buy a fleet comprising whichever is judged best after a trial period.

George Taylor, Bromley’s cabinet member for the environment, told residents: “By recycling, you are making a real difference to the environment.”
