The scheme is being set up to help retailers comply with forthcoming WEEE regulations, which will take affect from January 2006. The regulations will hand electrical retailers the responsibility to help fund collections of waste appliances.
BRC's retail compliance scheme will carry out this responsibility for its members by providing funds to turn local authority civic amenity sites into designated collection points.
Retailers will also be free to provide their own in-store take back services rather than join the retail compliance scheme, but the BRC is hoping its scheme can recruit both large and small retailers, as well as non-BRC members.
Interest
In an interview with letsrecycle.com published this week, the BRC's corporate social responsibility director Nigel Smith said there had already been interest expressed by major producer compliance schemes for the running of the retail scheme.
He said: “We have had interest from many of the major compliance schemes, along with several other organisations.”
The tender process runs until the end of June, with a decision expected some time next month.
