It has emerged that with the BMF offices owned outright, a cost saving could be made with the closure of the British Secondary Metals Association (BSMA) office in Lichfield, Staffordshire.
In the past the stumbling block behind the merger has been the level of subscriptions that would have been paid by the BSMA members which are traditionally lower than those charged by the BMF.
Now it is planned to freeze subscription levels for two years at least for the new organisation, a name for which is still to be agreed.
Exactly who would head the new trade association is unclear although David Hulse who will become the first director general of the BMF from April 1 is expected to hold the same post within the new organisation.
Duncan Wemyss, currently executive director of the BSMA, is expected to join Mr Hulse at Brampton.
