Boateng pulled away from Landfill Tax

Paul Boateng, the minister responsible for overseeing the Landfill Tax and its review, has been promoted as part of the cabinet reshuffle following the resignation of transport minister Stephen Byers.

Mr Boateng, MP for Brent South, becomes chief secretary to the Treasury in place of Alistair Darling, who moves to transport. Mr Boateng was formerly the financial secretary, and helped to launch a review of the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme back in October (see letsrecycle article).

The government has not yet announced who will carry on with the review of the Landfill Tax, but it is expected that the task will fall to a new minister. The review of the credit scheme – looking at using money taken from landfill taxes more effectively in promoting sustainable waste management – is still ongoing, but a new appointment could add delays to the process.
