The campaign aims to highlight items that frequently fail to reach the recycling bin. This nationwide endeavour seeks to involve children and families in a mission to locate ‘lost recyclables’ that frequently end up in the trash.

By concentrating on commonly overlooked items, including empty aerosols, plastic cleaning product bottles, plastic toiletry bottles, plastic containers, and food tins, Recycle Week aims to nurture a deeper comprehension of recycling among the younger generation.
Campaign
As part of the campaign Ms Mudenda will visit Oakdale Junior School in London on October 17th. The children at the school have been handpicked as the very first Recycling Youth Ambassadors for Recycle Week, thanks to their commitment to recycling and their desire to spark change within their communities.
During her visit, Ms Mudenda will celebrate the young ambassadors’ achievements and rally them to become educators, spreading the word about recycling. As the 2023 campaign’s Recycling Youth Ambassadors, these students will play a role in inspiring participation in “The Big Recycling Hunt.” This initiative aims to encourage eco-friendly practices and help others understand how to care for the planet.
Harriet Lamb, CEO of WRAP, the organisation behind Recycle Week said: “We are truly delighted to welcome Mwaksy as our ambassador for Recycle Week 2023, along with the students from Oakdale Junior School, who will serve as our official Recycling Youth Ambassadors. Recycling can become a daily, fun, family-friendly activity. Our ambassadors will help us inspire families with children of all ages to make recycling second-nature for all of us.”
Habit
In addition to raising awareness, WRAP states the ambassadorship offers students the opportunity to develop essential real-world skills such as leadership, communication, and active citizenship. As a reward for their efforts, the class will receive £250 to invest in sustainability resources and experiences.
Carley Smith, Head of School at Oakdale Junior School, said: “We are committed to being a voice for the planet, promoting awareness about the importance of recycling, reducing waste, and adopting eco-friendly practices. By raising awareness of ‘The Big Recycling Hunt,’ we aim to help create a future where recycling isn’t just a habit, but a way of life — a future where every plastic cleaning product, toiletry bottle, and food tin gets recycled, leaving a cleaner, healthier planet for generations to come.”
Recycle Week receives sponsorship from several prominent companies, such as Arla Foods, Boots, Britvic, Danone, and Tesco. Throughout the week, numerous local authorities and businesses will conduct their own initiatives and promotions.
