Bird steps down after ‘tremendous’ time as LARAC chair

VIDEO REPORT: Andrew Bird talks about his past four years as chair of the local authority recycling advisory committee (LARAC).

Andrew Bird, says he enjoyed his time as chair of LARAC “tremendously” after stepping down from the role at the end of January.

Carole Taylor, whose appointment was announced in November (see letsrecycle.com story), has now taken over the position.

In an interview with letsrecycle.com, Mr Bird said: “It’s been a tremendous four years. I’ve got to meet a huge amount of very interesting people from across the industry, sector and supply chain. It’s been quite an eye-opener but yes very exciting and very challenging at times.”

Mr Bird was elected in 2014 having previously held the position of policy support officer for LARAC. The role of LARAC chair is limited to a maximum four-year term.

Mr Bird will remain a member of the Executive given he is half-way through his two-year term as a nationally elected representative. He is also head of recycling and fleet management at Newcastle-under-Lyme council.

Welcoming Carole Taylor as the next chair, Mr Bird said: “Carole is a very level-headed person, she is very engaging, she’s very easy to get on with and she will certainly bring that to LARAC and again to LARAC’s dealing with other organisations.”

In the past Mr Bird has emphasised the important role that local authorities play in encouraging the public to recycle.

Discussing ways of increasing recycling, Mr Bird has previously been critical of weight-based targets for not focussing on the value of materials. He has also said that companies producing packaging materials need to do more to make them recyclable.
