The facility, at Weston-super-Mare was acquired from Enovert for an undisclosed sum and the deal was led by Ancala Partners, an infrastructure investment manager.
Commenting on the acquisition, Adam Feneley, managing director of Biogen, said: “This is an ideal addition to the Biogen portfolio and provides exposure to a new geographic region for the business.
“We look forward to working in partnership with Enovert to improve recycling targets and increase renewable energy generation for the benefit of the local community and stakeholders.”
Relationship
Mark Silvester, chief executive officer of Enovert, noted that Biogen and Enovert would be developing a close working relationship following the transaction.
He added: “Enovert are very proud of what we have achieved with the Weston-super-Mare anaerobic digestion facility, which we originally designed, built and operated. We are delighted with the sale to Biogen, an experienced operator of anaerobic digestion plants.”
“This is an ideal addition to the Biogen portfolio and provides exposure to a new geographic region for the business.”
Biogen explained in a statement that AD will be an “important component” in achieving future government goals which are likely to restrict the amount of waste which can be sent to landfill.
Spence Clunie, managing partner at Ancala Partners, commented: “The Weston-super-Mare facility is a high-quality asset serving an important community. Its integration into our Biogen platform will mean it can benefit from resources and expertise of the team.”
‘Important component’
Biogen explained that the Weston-super-Mare AD site is a key part of the waste management and food recycling programme in the region, collecting discarded food waste from the local area as well as additional waste from nearby businesses.
Methane gas produced at the facility is converted through a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engine that generates electricity for approximately 2,000 homes. It also converts food waste into a nutrient-rich biofertiliser.
Enovert
The Enovert facility was previously run by Cory under its Cory Environmental Resource Management division. It was renamed Enovert after being sold to Armour Group (see Letsrecycle.com story).
The company mainly operates landfill sites, along with two composting facilities and three waste transfer sites. The Weston-Super-Mare site was the only AD plant which Enovert ran.
