Biffa Waste Services is offering box collections paper, glass and textiles under the four-year deal, which started on Monday. The company is aiming to achieve a recycling rate of 40% by 2010 under the new contract.

Bridgend county borough council ran a survey in the town and discovered that 98% of its residents were in favour of recycling services being offered.
Commenting on the contract Biffa's municipal collections general manager, Gary Bowles, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the recycling contract with Bridgend. The fact that we also operate the collection contract means that we can provide synergistic advantages and a single point of contact for the authority on all waste collection and recycling matters.
“Further, the technology we are utilising is helping us provide more effective collection and recycling services for local authorities and is assisting in the achievement of landfill diversion and recycling targets,” he added.
Reporting
As part of the contract Biffa will use its in-cab reporting system for the new collections. As each job is completed, the driver is able to report back to the depot so that the date and time of the collection can be recorded.

Biffa has operated a weekly household collection throughout Bridgend since April 2003. The introduction of the new recycling service will see waste collections remain on a weekly basis, with recycling collections taking place on an alternate weekly basis.
