Reported by letsrecycle.com in July, the near £50 million contract – which could be extended up to 2037 – will see the firm takeover the unitary authority’s waste and recycling collections from Kier in March (see letsrecycle.com story).
Four other firms bid for the work last year – Cory, FCC Environment, Kier and Suez.
So far this year, Biffa has secured six municipal contracts, four of which resulted from Biffa’s recent acquisition of the municipal and industrial and commercial business of contractor Cory. The other contract is with Cannock Chase District Council, which started in April.
These contracts bring the annual turnover of Biffa’s municipal division to nearly £200 million. The company’s acquisition earlier this summer of Cory Environmental’s local authority side brought with it a contract for the whole of Cornwall.
‘Stepping-stone’
Biffa Municipal managing director Roger Edwards described the North Somerset win as “an excellent result”, which provides Biffa with “another stepping stone into the South West municipal market”.
He said: “North Somerset has solid plans to advance its outstanding recycling record while husbanding financial resources.
“With Biffa’s proven experience in helping authorities to reduce waste through effective recycling, coupled with high service standards and cost-saving productivity, we should make a formidable team.”
The council is also rolling out changes to how waste and recyclables are collected at the kerbside, with the introduction of new boxes for householders and garden waste to move to a subscription-based service.
