RMC today said that it could not comment on the progress of talks to sell its waste division which it had originally hoped to conclude before Christmas 2002. Other firms could still be in the frame for the purchase. An announcement might come next week when RMC publishes its preliminary results for 2002.
Should the purchase of Hales be confirmed, Biffa would acquire what Hales describes as “the UK's largest fleet of skip type vehicles, offering services to householders, builders, industry and commerce.”
Hales has 39 strategically located customer centres and provide a recycling service for the storage and collection of segregated cardboard, paper, plastic, metals, glass and solvents.
Glass collection is important to Hales and it works with its current sister company, RMC Aggregates which developed the 'Glasphalt' mix that has won Valpak support. The mix sees recycled glass crushed and used as a road building material.
