Biffa acquires Total Recycling Services

Biffa has announced the acquisition of Darlington-based industrial waste business Total Recycling Services (TRS), as it looks to expand its reach in the North East.

TRS employs around 100 staff and also operates a liquid waste management facility

Biffa explained that the acquisition for an undisclosed fee aligns with its strategy for growth in the industrial waste sector, particularly in the North-East where it previously had no presence.

TRS employs around 100 people and has three sites across the North East, including a liquid waste transfer facility. Among its 200 customers are some of the largest manufacturers in the UK.

Gavin Williams, Biffa’s specialist services managing director, said: “This is a fantastic acquisition that provides us with a high-profile presence in the North-East for the first time.

“We’ve gained a high-quality hazardous waste transfer station and a large fleet of vehicles, including tankers, for the safe and efficient collection and treatment of customers’ industrial waste, including hazardous liquids and non-hazardous waste.

“We are delighted to have completed the deal and are excited to begin working with the team at TRS.”

Customers

Some of the customers which TRS serves include those in the chemical, automotive and pharmaceutical sectors.

The liquid recycling site was purchased from Veolia and a £3 million upgrade was completed in 2020.

Alongside general waste and recycling, it has a liquid recycling site which can also accept and process paint. This process sees liquid and solids separated from the paint for further processing or disposal.

Alex Foreman, TRS managing director, said: “The deal is great news for TRS and its staff, customers and suppliers.

“I have been extremely impressed with the professionalism of the whole Biffa team through the sale process. Our staff and management team are really looking forward to working with our new colleagues.”

The shareholders of TRS were advised by Cavu Corporate Finance and Weightmans LLP.  Biffa were advised by Grant Thornton and TLT.
