The Secretary of State was in the city to discuss the issue of climate change with international scientists, as part of the UK's attempt to highlight the issue under its G8 Presidency this year.
Mrs Beckett visited Exeter city council's Exton Road materials recycling facility (MRF) on the Marsh Barton industrial estate on the last leg of a tour of the west country during this week's climate change conference.
The MP for Derby South saw how the 1.7 million MRF sorts paper, plastics, textiles and aluminium cans collected through the Council's Recycle from Home scheme. The MRF was opened in 2001 and can handle up to 12,000 tonnes of recyclables a year.
Encouraging
Mrs Beckett told reporters: “Exeter's facility is very encouraging, very good. Our department has put a lot of money into investments of this kind.”
The city council's Recycle from Home scheme provides residents in Exeter with two wheeled bins– a green bin for recyclable waste and a grey bin for non-recyclable waste. These are collected on alternate weeks.

Currently Exeter is sending nearly 50 tonnes of paper and magazines each day to be recycled by Aylesford Newsprint in Kent, helping the city reach a 17% recycling rate in 2003/04.
