Baylis Recycling intends to expand its current mixed plastic and can collections into the north of England. In order to do this a new sorting facility is to be put in place at Leeds.
” We want to be able to provide local sorting facilities to our councils so this site will allow us to expand into the north “
– Chris Baylis, Baylis Recycling
The plant, which will also be capable of dealing with around 15,000 tonnes per annum, will be used to take in materials from local authorities in Yorkshire.
Chris Baylis, managing director, said: “We currently have twelve local authorities signed up to our mixed cans and plastics scheme, all within 40 minutes of our site. We want to be able to provide local sorting facilities to our councils so this site will allow us to expand into the north.”
According to Mr Baylis, the plant – valued at around 500,000 – will be in place and running by the end of December 2005.
PET reprocessing
Baylis announced in July that it was expanding its reprocessing capacity with a new PET recycling plant to be built in Surrey. This would compliment the company's HDPE reprocessing plant and sorting facility currently at Langley, just outside Slough.
But, the company has now said that it will be building the PET reprocessing plant at its Langley site, with the sorting plant that is currently housed there to be moved to another site in the area.
Mr Baylis said: “While we are setting this all up we wanted to have the two reprocessing plants in together. We have several other buildings in Langley which could house the sorting plant.”

Baylis has said that the PET plant will be the first in the UK to use PET friction washing. The plant will have the capacity to reprocess around 15,000 tonnes of plastic per year, the same amount as Baylis' current HDPE reprocessing plant.
New manager
In order to help the company with its new ventures, Baylis has taken on a new products manager who will be responsible for overseeing the PET plant as well as the growth in Yorkshire.
Baylis currently collects a combination of PET and HDPE bottles, as well as cans. The collections are sorted and the PET and cans are sent elsewhere within the UK for reprocessing.
