Babcock & Wilcox targets UK EfW market

Energy from waste and biomass specialist Babcock & Wilcox Vlund has appointed former Biffa development director Simon Allin to spearhead its expansion into the UK market.

The company is a subsidiary of the US-based Babcock & Wilcox Company which carries out design, engineering, manufacturing, construction and facilities management services for the nuclear, renewable and fossil fuel energy sectors.

Mr Allin has been appointed as UK business development manager for the firm and will be based at a new office to be established in Birmingham.

He has over 20 years in the environmental services sector having worked at DHL Envirosolutions as well as Biffa and Viridor Waste Management.

During his time at Biffa, Mr Allin worked closely on energy from waste projects, including overseeing plans for incinerators in Leeds, Leicestershire and Birmingham (see letsrecycle.com story).

Peterborough

The news comes after Babcock & Wilcox was appointed as the joint contractor alongside Interserve Construction to undertake engineering, procurement and construction for waste management firm Viridor on its Fenland EfW facility in Peterborough.

The facility forms part of Viridors 30-year contract with Viridor to treat around 85,000 tonnes a year residual waste on behalf of Peterborough city council, signed earlier this month (see letsrecycle.com story).

The plant, which is being built on a site close to the Peterborough Power Station, will use heat to turn non-recyclable waste to ash and energy. This will reduce the amount of waste that Peterborough council sends to landfill by over 93%. The ash can also be recycled into aggregate for building roads.

The Fenland facility will generate around 53,000 megawatt hours of electricity, which can be used locally or sold to the National Grid- enough electricity to power approximately 15% of the homes in Peterborough.

Milestone

Commenting on the contract, Babcock & Wilcox Vlund chief executive John Veje Olesen, said: The new contract marks an important milestone for Babcock & Wilcox Vlund in the UK, where we see a great potential for environmentally friendly and efficient energy production from combustion of residual waste.

Similar facilities are to be planned in the UK in the coming years and the new plant in Peterborough will be an excellent showcase for our technology and our turnkey solutions together with Interserve.
