Opened at a site on Hickman Avenue, the plant will process up to 75,000 tonnes of non-hazardous waste each year from local authorities and businesses.
Plastics, cardboard, metals, stone, glass and soil will be segregated using state-of-the art technology designed by local company Portable Conveyors.
The site will specialise in crushing and blending secondary aggregates for use in construction, tarmac and cement production and for sporting surfaces. While the company specialises in dealing with industrial and commercial waste, it said the MRF is also to be used for local authority contracts.
Wates
The AWM Group has already signed a deal with construction firm Wates Group, which last month vowed to stop sending non-hazardous waste to landfill within five years (see letsrecycle.com story).
Commenting on the new MRF, Paul Woodhead, AWM Group managing director, said: “A growing number of businesses have environmental and corporate responsibility targets and this facility works in partnership with these enterprises whether large or small to attain these goals.”
Mr Woodhead added that the new site would cater particularly well for small businesses. He said: “The facility helps make the ability for SMEs to satisfy their environmental aspirations where waste volumes are smaller and often co-mingled.”
