Winners of the inaugural awards will be revealed at a ceremony in London on October 21 attended by Environment Minister Elliot Morley.
The awards cover categories spanning both the commercial and local authority sectors with several unique categories, including recognition of collection crews and innovation in design of waste management facilities.
Jeff Cooper, chair of the judging panel, said: “Considering that this was the first year for these Awards I thought that the number of entries for the Awards was remarkable. The quality of the majority of entries was also high which gave the judging panel a difficult choice in deciding a winner for every category.”
While winners will be announced on October 21, the full roll of honour – in alphabetical order – is as follows:

High Street recycling champion initiative
- Cartridge World for inkjet recycling work.
- Kevin Rusby of Land Securities for recycling work at The Bridges shopping centre, Sunderland.
- St Nicholas Shopping Centre, Sutton's recycling and waste management programme.
Commercial Recycling Champion
- Derek Brown of NHS Ayrshire and Arran Acute Hospitals Division for recycling and waste management inititiative in the general hospitals division.
- Hugh Carr-Harris, London Remade, for recycling work with London's businesses.
- John May, Corus, for continued efforts to grow the recycling of steel cans.
Commercial Waste Management Initiative
- Eurostar for recycling initiatives to tackle waste on trains and offices.
- HSBC for the recycling and reuse of office furniture with Green-Works.
- Viridor Glass Recycling for recycling work to tackle production process waste.
Innovation in Design
- Onyx Integra's energy recovery facility at Chineham.
- Norfolk Environmental Waste Services' materials recycling facility at Costessey.
- SITA Isle of Man's energy from waste facility.
Collection Crew of the Year
- Onyx, Market Harborough.
- Stockton-on-Tees Borough council.
- Chichester District council.
Waste Industry and Local Authority Partnership
- Monmouthshire CC and Wormtech Ltd.
- Norfolk Environmental Waste Services consortium contract with five local authorities: Broadland, Breckland, North Norfolk, Norwich City and South Norfolk.
- Sutton London borough council with London boroughs of Merton, Croydon, Kingston and Viridor Waste Management.
Civic Amenity Site of the Year
- Belfast city council – Blackstaff Way recycling centre.
- Gloucestershire county council – Wingmoor Farm household recycling centre.
- Somerset county council – Highbridge household waste recycling centre.
Best local authority recycling initiative
- Hyndburn borough council.
- South Cambridgeshire district council.
- Wakefield MBC.
Local authority recycling champion
- Councilllor Colin Barker, South Cambridgeshire district council.
- Alison Page, environmental manager, Three Rivers district council.
- Ysanne Williams, recycling officer, Lichfield city council.
