Awards for Excellence 2015 launched

The prestigious 2015 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management are now open for entries after the industry’s ‘Oscars’ was officially launched at the RWM exhibition in Birmingham last week.

The Awards for Excellence will once again take place at the Landmark Hotel in London

Now in its 12th year, the awards scheme celebrates the innovation and dedication of the UK recycling sector – including local authorities, commercial companies and community groups – for its efforts in driving better use of resources and increasing recycling rates.

The 2015 event launch follows the biggest year yet for the awards, as last year organisers and founders the Environment Media Group included a new category – Circular Economy Success – as well as new award branding.

Awards – sponsored by the likes of Saica Natur, Wastecare, Ceris Burns International and Biffa – are now up for grabs in 11 categories, with entries scrutinised by an experienced, independent judging panel. The awards are free to enter but must be submitted before the entry deadline on March 19 2015.

Winners in 2014 included: Croydon council’s RC8 collection crew; charity the British Heart Foundation; social enterprise Bulky Bobs; and Lincolnshire plastics recycler ECO Plastics (see letsrecycle.com story).

The 2015 awards ceremony and dinner on Thursday May 14 once again takes place at the five-star Landmark Hotel in London from 12pm-4pm, and will be hosted by a high-profile TV newsreader. Previous hosts have included ITV’s Julie Etchingham and BBC Breakfast’s Susanna Reid.

Speaking about the 2015 launch, letsrecycle.com editor, Steve Eminton, said: “Entries were up by 44% last year, with fantastic examples of work being undertaken by individuals and within companies to contribute to global sustainability. I am confident that the 2015 entries will reach even higher standards of creativity, effectiveness and innovation. It really is a ‘must attend’ event, which never fails to inspire, and offers a fantastic chance for networking and sharing best practice.

“The pace of change in the UK recycling and waste management industry is fast, and excellent work is being done consistently, whether this is in terms of service delivery or product development. The Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management provide an opportunity for the sector to celebrate its successes and achievements – and I look forward to seeing this year’s entries.”
