Awards call for recycling sector’s unsung heroes

Unsung heroes in the waste and recycling sector – or their colleagues – are being urged to honour their achievements by entering the annual Awards for Excellence.

Organisers of the awards said today that there is just one month to go for entries to be sent in, with the entry deadline set at September 5.

Awards in nine categories will be presented by a high profile BBC presenter at a glittering ceremony in London’s Savoy Hotel in October.

Recognition will go to a wide variety of individuals and organisations working hard to improve the nation’s management of materials and resources.

This could include anyone from the collection crews at the front end of recycling and waste services to the companies that build new treatment facilities, commercial organisations reducing their waste impact and retailers bringing recycling to the High Street.

Entry forms can be downloaded here or from the Awards website, where more details are available on the Awards and how to enter.

The categories for the awards are as follows:

  • High street recycling champion
    sponsored by Severnside
  • Commercial recycling champion
    sponsored by Valpak
  • Commercial waste management initiative
    sponsored by Shanks
  • Innovation in design of a waste management facility
    sponsored by the ESTET Trust
  • Collection crew of the year
    sponsored by SITA UK
  • Resource management industry and local authority partnership

  • Civic amenity site of the year
    sponsored by Transform
  • Best local authority recycling initiative

The Awards are being supported by Defra, the Environment Agency, the Environmental Services Association and the National Association of Waste Disposal Officers.

Barry Van Danzig, chief executive of Wastepack, said: “Our industry sometimes takes flak because of the failings of a few. The Excellence Awards create a great opportunity for the silent majority to come forward and tell the world about the many positive developments that are taking place.

“I congratulate letsrecycle.com on establishing the Awards as such an important date in our industry calendar. Everyone who has a story to tell should do so with pride by entering the Excellence Awards,” Mr Van Danzig added.
