Augean North Sea Services – a subsidiary of hazardous waste treatment company Augean plc – will Forth Ports Dundee service the ‘growing’ North Sea decommissioning market.
The market has become a multi-billion pound industry which is expected to remain active over the next 20 years as equipment used in oil and gas explorations reaches its end of life.
Materials to be handled by the Augean plant will include offshore equipment produced by North Sea oil and gas exploration, production and decommissioning activities.
Based at the Port of Dundee, the 25,000 square feet transfer facility is due to open in early 2017, and will be built adjacent to Forth Ports’ ultra-heavy lift decommissioning quayside.
Combined, the two facilities will be fully operational by the end of next year and bring ‘large-scale’ decommissioning to Scotland, according to Augean.

Simon Gibb, managing director of Augean North Sea Services, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Port of Dundee to provide onshore disposal and waste management services for decommissioning projects at this excellent facility.
“This is fully in line with our strategy of providing complete waste services for the North Sea and follows successful completion of our first decommissioning projects in 2016.”
Charles Hammond, chief executive of Forth Ports, welcomed the partnership with Augean adding that the facility would be ‘ideally placed’ to meet the service needs of the sector.
He said: “The port’s proximity to the skill base in Dundee along with unrivalled land space and quayside strength makes it the logical choice for large scale decommissioning in Scotland.”
Dr Stewart Davies, chief executive of Augean plc, added: “This is an exciting development in our previously announced strategy of positioning Augean North Sea Services for the growing North Sea decommissioning market. This is not expected to have a material impact on the results for the current financial year or 2017.”
