Ernst & Young appoints landfill tax expert

Landfill tax specialist Paul O’Neill has joined financial services firm Ernst & Young as a senior manager.

Mr O’Neill has joined following an eight year stint at KPMG, as well as three years at HMRC. He will work alongside EY partner Julian Bowden-Williams, advising on environmental tax issues including landfill tax, aggregates levy, climate change levy and air passenger duty.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr O’Neill said: “It is the ideal time to be joining EY’s growing tax practice, given continued and significant change to environmental taxes. I’m particularly looking forward to providing a fresh perspective to landfill tax and look forward to working closely with corporate clients to help them overcome the challenges and capitalise on the opportunities presented by the existing complex legislation and the expected various legislation changes.”

Mr Bowden-Williams added: “Paul brings a wealth of experience and will prove invaluable in helping our clients reduce the increasing burden of environmental taxes on their business.”

SWR promotes from within for CEO role

Hampshire based recycling firm Specialist Waste Recycling (SWR) has announced that finance director Andy Butler has been promoted to the chief executive role.

Mr Butler, who has been with SWR for four years replaces former chief executive Giles Whiteley, who left the company in August to form consultancy firm Orbisa.

SWR has also announced the appointment of Mark Avenell as operations director, Will Keer as motor business development director and Wayne Basham as commercial director.

Butler to head up CK Services

Lincolnshire based plastics recycling, export and logistics firm CK Group has announced that David Barber has been named divisional director of CK Services – its wheeled bin distribution business.

Mr Barber, who joined CK Group as general manager in 2011, has over 30 years of experience within the logistics sector.

He will be responsible for the running of the CK Services business, which collects wheeled bins and containers from local authorities at the end of their lives for processing at a CK Group plastics recycling facility.

The firm also distributes new containers and bins to householders. CK Services was recently appointed to deliver wheeled bins to 61,000 households on behalf of the Borough of Poole council.

Commenting on the appointment, Mark Whitney, managing director of CK Group, said: “We are extremely grateful to David for establishing the division so quickly. He should be really pleased with his achievement and the significant contribution this division has made to the success of the CK Group overall.”

Burgess joins Biffa from UPM

UPM’s national sourcing manager Mike Burgess has joined Biffa Municipal as business development manager.

Having spent six years at paper firm UPM where he dealt with local authorities and recycling firms, Dr Burgess will now work on the collection side of the industry.

Biffa Municipal works with over 40 local authorities in England, Wales and Scotland, employing over 3,000 staff.

Former Taylor man joins senior team at Envac

Underground vacuum waste management supplier, Envac UK, has appointed container manufacturer Taylor’s former sales manager for the South East of England, Dave Buckley, to the role of general sales manager.

Mr Buckley reports to the firm’s managing director Patrick Haraldsson. The firm, celebrating its seventh anniversary in the UK, is currently seeking to expand its operations in the UK, and is hopeful that its system will be incorporated among a number of new developments across London.

Welcoming Mr Buckley to the company, Mr Haraldsson said: “Dave is a well-established figure within the sector and has a solid track record of securing large waste equipment contracts. As the UK begins to question the way it collects waste and looks for new approaches to counteract rapid urban development and a growing population, Dave’s appointment couldn’t have come at a better time. We look forward to working together, growing the team and continuing to extend Envac’s position within the UK market.”
