Viridor appoints Scottish managing director
Waste firm Viridor has appointed a new regional managing director to oversee its operations in Scotland.
Paul Brown, who will serve as Viridor’s Scottish Regional managing director starting next week (February 1), joins the company from a senior role at Scottish Power Energy Networks.

He replaces current regional managing director Colin Paterson, who has left the role after 18 years.
The appointment will see Mr Brown develop Viridor’s portfolio north of the border, where the recycling and resources division of the company is currently investing around £500 million in new projects.
The firm was recently awarded ‘preferred bidder’ status on the £700 milion Clyde Valley Residual Waste project – with waste from five Scottish local authorities sent to its energy recovery facility in Dunbar (see letsrecycle.com story).
Mr Brown said: “This is an exciting time to be joining Viridor at the forefront of creating a more resource-efficient and sustainable UK, and I’m delighted to be leading efforts to realise Viridor’s vision for Scotland. By working with the team, clients, Scottish Government, and local communities, we will do our best to ensure a greener and more circular economy for the country.”
Ian McAulay, chief executive of Viridor, added: “We’re delighted to welcome Paul to our team. This is a critical time for resources and renewable energy policy in Scotland, including the delivery of our Scottish infrastructure projects. Paul brings a wealth of experience from within Scotland and overseas and will make a real contribution to our business.”
Gwendoline Riou joins EUROPEN
The European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment (EUROPEN) has appointed Gwendoline Riou as its EU Public Affairs and communications manager.
Ms Riou has worked in several Brussels-based EU Public Affairs consultancies, contributing to the design of pan-European communications campaigns including for beverage and packaging companies.
The appointment will see her support the EUROPEN team in advocating the interests of the packaging supply chain and its waste stream in the wake of the revised Circular Economy proposals.
Commenting on the new role, she said: “I am proud and honoured to be joining EUROPEN at such an interesting time for the packaging supply chain in Europe. I trust that my previous public affairs experience in advising packaged goods and packaging companies will allow for a smooth start in my new role.
“I look forward to working with the EUROPEN team and its broad supply chain membership to further promote the enabling role and environmental improvements of packaging and packaged goods in Europe.”
As an EU industry association, EUROPEN is made up of members comprising multinational companies presenting the opinion of the packaging supply chain.
VEKA announces commercial director appointment
Simon Scholes has joined the board of directors at VEKA Recycling Ltd as commercial director.

The role will see Mr Scholes takeover responsibility for sales, marketing, administration and accounts at the PVC window recycling specialist.
In addition, he will also take charge of the management of VEKA’s recycling centre in the West Midlands and Cornwall.
Norbert Bruns, managing director of VEKA Umwelttechnik, parent company for VEKA Recycling, said the appointment would add strength and depth to the company.
He said: “We have ambitious long-term plans for VEKA Recycling Ltd and to achieve these we need the expertise and commitment that Simon can offer, to achieve the company’s aims of course, but also to develop the market for recycling PVC-U just as we have done throughout Europe.”
Mr Scholes added: “Obviously I am very happy with this appointment. We have made a measurable difference in respect of the volumes PVC-U material returned to the market. A key objective now is to prove our ability to supply high quality recyclate, reliably and consistently.”
