Waste and recycling management company Viridor has announced that Simon Catford, human resources and regulatory director, is to retire at the end of December 2016.

Mr Catford, who joined Viridor in 1991, has served as a board director since 2010. According to Viridor he was instrumental in developing its current HR strategy, training and professional development programmes as well as leading the company’s compliance and regulatory function during a period of major transition across the sector.

He also represented the business in organisations such as Energy & Utility Skills, the Waste Management, Recycling & Resource Recovery Industry Skills Initiative (WRRISKI), Environmental Services Association (ESA), Viridor Credits and the Citrus Pension scheme.

Viridor will pass its compliance and regulatory responsibility to Inder Poonaji, director of sustainability. A director of HR will be appointed later in the year.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr Catford said: “I’ve enjoyed working with some brilliant people over the years, many of whom I count as friends. However it is now time for a new director to lead the development of our skilled and professional workforce through the next phase of Viridor’s strategy.”

The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE) UK has appointed Mandy Kelly as its new senior recycling manager.

Ms Kelly has over 30 years’ experience in the recycling industry, her previous role being Palm Recycling’s business development director.

In addition, Ms Kelly served as a member for the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) recovered paper committee and was a founder member and elected board director of the Resource Association.

Richard Hands, chief executive of ACE UK said: “She  brings with her a wealth of experience, and knows the recycling industry inside out. Her local authority knowledge and contacts will be a real asset as we continue to drive forward carton recycling across the UK.”

Ms Kelly added: “My predecessor is well known and respected in the industry and I am looking forward to building on the work she has done by further developing and extending carton recycling, and highlighting cartons as a sustainable, low carbon packaging choice for beverages and beyond.”

Keenan appoints central Scotland food waste manager

Organics recycling company, Keenan Recycling, has welcomed Malcolm Coppins to the team as the company’s central Scotland food waste collections manager at its office in Linlithgow.

In his new role, Mr Coppins will oversee collections of organic waste from businesses in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Mr Coppins has held a number of key management and operational roles and he will use his experience to oversee the operation of the new base as the firm works to help companies meet targets set out in The Waste (Scotland) Regulations.

Business development manager at Keenan Recycling, Claire Keenan, said: “The next set of Waste (Scotland) Regulations came into force at the start of the year meaning that it is now compulsory for all companies producing a small amount of food waste to recycle it, and Malcolm’s role is vital to oversee the smooth running of operations in Glasgow and Edinburgh.”

Mr Coppins added: “Managing the daily operations of Keenan Recycling’s newest base is a great challenge, and I am enjoying my role. I look forward to the growth of the company in the Central Belt as new rules and regulations are implemented.”

Clarity Environmental takes on new business development executive

Compliance and recycling specialist, Clarity Environmental, has appointed a new business development executive to assist its growing waste to fuel division.

Troy Tolhurst is working on the company’s wood recycling service, which was launched last year. This division works with waste producers and demolition companies collecting grade C wood and converting it into biomass fuel for energy from waste plants.

Mr Tolhurst will support the businesses currently taking part in Clarity’s wood recycling service, as well as promoting its range of solutions to new clients across the UK.

David Adams, Clarity managing director said: “It is still relatively new, but our wood recycling service is proving to be a success, with an increasing number of businesses taking advantage of the solutions we have to offer. With his strong sales background, I am confident that Troy will be a valuable addition to our team, helping us to further grow the division.”

Mr Tolhurst added: “I am really pleased to join Clarity at such an exciting time for the waste to fuel division. I’m looking forward to working with our current clients, converting their wood to fuel, as well as introducing our services to more businesses, helping to find recycling solutions for their waste wood.”

Baroness Jenkin joins WRAP as trustee

Waste and resources charity, WRAP, has announced that Anne Jenkin, Baroness Jenkin of Kennington, has joined its board of trustees.

Baroness Jenkin, a member of the House of Lords since 2011, is vice chair of the all-party parliamentary group on food waste, and is trustee to Feeding Britain, a charity set up to help people in poverty.

In 2011, Jenkin also hosted a ‘Feeding the 5000’ event in the House of Lords to raise awareness of food waste to Peers.

Baroness Jenkin of Kennington, said: “I am a long-time admirer of WRAP, particularly its work to reduce food waste, and am therefore delighted to join its board as trustee. I look forward to helping WRAP continue efforts to reduce waste to the benefit of people’s lives and finances.”
