The ESA, which is the trade association for the waste industry, has organised speakers from DEFRA, the Environment Agency, the British Retail Consortium and the Food and Drink Federation for the one-day conference on June 26.
The conference will aim to explore the likely impact of the legislation on food producers, retailers, composters, local authorities and waste management companies. For example, the Regulation, which came into force in the UK on May 1, redefines animal by-products and catering waste and significantly changes the way some food waste must be handled.
Ban
When the UK brings the legislation into effect by means of a statutory instrument – expected within the next month – it will also reverse the current ban on the composting of catering waste, although strict controls will remain in place for composting food.
ESA senior policy executive Andrew Ainsworth said: “These changes will also affect local authorities which collect waste from food producers and waste management companies which will have to look at new ways of managing animal by-products and catering waste.”
