Mr Doran, who worked with Novelis on setting up the first UK can recycling schemes in the early 1990s, is to become national manager from April 2006.
He takes on the role vacated late last year by Rick Hindley, who has now joined the packaging waste compliance scheme Valpak.
As national manager of Novelis, Mr Doran will use his extensive links to the local authority sector to help drive up aluminium can recycling rates in order to meet the 2008 recycling targets set by Europe's Packaging Directive.
Novelis has a leading role in meeting the Directive's producer responsibility demands, with its reprocessing plant in Warrington the only plant in Europe dedicated to the remelting of used aluminium beverage cans.
Experience
Before heading up local authority waste performance within Defra's waste strategy team for the past year, Mr Doran chaired the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee for two years. The chairmanship came after extensive experience in recycling and waste management while working for the London borough of Hillingdon and Surrey county council.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Doran said: “The aluminium packaging recycling industry in this country has made impressive progress in the past 15 years, and in so-doing has made a vital contribution to developing the UK’s recycling infrastructure.
“There are many challenges to be faced in the coming months and years, but Novelis is a company with a strong heritage of driving change and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to its future,” he said.
