Agency to discuss TEEP at Commercial Waste Conference

Businesses will have the opportunity to quiz the Environment Agency on new requirements to present waste separately for collection at the Commercial Waste Conference, hosted by letsrecycle.com, in London this month (February 26).

Ben Glatt, environment and business advisor for the Agency is set to give a presentation on TEEP and separate collections at the all day conference at Holborn Bars outlining how the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations apply to businesses.

The revised environmental regulations, which came into effect from January 1, state that separate collections of at least paper, metal, plastic and glass for commercial waste are a legal requirement, unless it is not technically, environmentally or economically practicable (TEEP) or necessary to allow high quality recycling of the material.

Some guidance on how this should be applied has been issued in the form of a briefing note distributed by the Environment Agency last month (see letsrecycle.com story) which outlines how businesses should apply the rules and the approach likely to be taken by the Agency in policing the requirements.

Debate

With much of the debate to now having focused on the impact on the legal requirements for local authorities, the Commercial Waste Conference provides an opportunity to understand the effect of the new laws on businesses and collectors of commercial waste.

The conference will also hear from Adam Read, practice director at environmental consultancy Ricardo AEA who will offer guidance on what retailers and other waste producers should be doing to meet the waste regulations. Presentations from Helistrat, The Bath BID Company and Valpak will further explore the waste landscape for businesses.

Case studies on waste from food retailers, shopping centres, hospitals and manufacturing also feature on the programme.
