Agency confirms 250m windrow buffer zone

The Environment Agency has recently reviewed the 250 metre buffer zone for open windrow composting sites and found the distance is still valid, Environment Minister Joan Ruddock has revealed.

The minister was responding to concerns raised in a recent parliamentary debate which saw concerns about bioaerosols from windrow sites raised by Barnsley West and Penistone MP, Michael Clapham.

He chose to raise the issue because of proposals for a windrow site at Hood Green within his constituency. He argued that a 250m buffer zone was not enough to protect people living in close proximity to open windrow composting sites from bioaerosols and odours.

It is important to stress that background figures vary from location to location
