The Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund for Wales will spend 1.7 million in each of 2002/03 and 2003/04 to encourage the use of recycled aggregates and shift demand away from primary aggregates. The money will also combat environmental damage caused by quarrying.
All communities within five miles of a quarry will be able to apply to the fund for environmental and amenity benefits
Historical environments created by quarrying and geological features exposed by the industry will be conserved.
The fund, financed in part by the aggregates levy, was launched by Welsh environment minister Sue Essex.
She said: “The Welsh Assembly has demonstrated its commitment to an inclusive and robust way of distributing funds to those communities in Wales affected by quarrying.”
The fund will be administered by an advisory panel including assembly officials and representatives of the Wales Council for Voluntary Action, the Quarry Products Association, the Welsh Local Government Association and the Countryside Council for Wales.
