Bradford man pays £1,600 for fly-tipping

Bradford Council’s Environmental Enforcement Team has announced it has fined a man £727 for fly-tipping.

Nicky Ellis of Albert Terrace, Oakenshaw, was also ordered to pay a £291 Victim Surcharge and £658.88 in costs, totalling over £1,600 in penalties.

The council said he was charged for an incident on 24 August last year, where Mr Ellis was caught illegally dumping waste on Staithgate Lane, Bradford.

Mr Ellis claimed that 10 bags of plant material and other waste accidentally fell from his van due to an unsecured side door. However, CCTV footage from cameras installed by Bradford council on Staithgate Lane captured a different story. The footage showed the waste being thrown from the van onto the highway and grass verge.

Despite being confronted with the CCTV evidence during his interview, Mr Ellis continued to assert that the waste had fallen out accidentally. However, faced with the footage presented by the council’s solicitor during a hearing at Bradford Magistrates Court, the council reported that he admitted to the offence.

The council said the “deliberate disposal of waste from a moving vehicle is particularly hazardous, posing significant risks to other road users, especially on a road with a national speed limit”.

Reminder

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford council’s executive member for healthy people and places, said: “Today’s case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of illegal waste disposal. We urge anyone who witnesses fly-tipping to report it to us as soon as possible. We can then investigate, take action to remove it and try to trace those responsible.”
