Our next webinar focuses on the lessons learnt from Rearranging the Furniture, the report that concluded a design residency programme ran by the RSA’s Great Recovery project and SUEZ earlier this year.

Under the programme, designers examined the bulky waste stream, including domestic items such as carpets, mattresses and furniture at Community Recycling Centres hosted by Surrey County Council.

With an emphasis on bulky waste or, more importantly, how to reduce it from being produced in the first place, the report and webinar offer recommendations for all parts of the supply chain, including policy makers, designers or manufacturers, local authorities and waste managers. Whilst championing some circular economy principles, such as designing for longevity or encouraging reverse logistics, the report highlights some obstacles to reuse, such as the ever contentious fire label.

The webinar will feature experts from some of the areas Rearranging the Furniture report provides recommendations for – Sophie Thomas of the RSA and Dr Gev Eduljee of SUEZ.

With ‘mend and make do’ being an approach of the distant past, is it possible to encourage reuse again?
