Crews remained at Stoneyhill Quarry near Longhaven in Aberdeenshire on Monday morning after a fire broke out on Saturday afternoon (1 August 2026), while firefighters also attended a blaze involving several vehicles at Masons landfill site in Great Blakenham, Suffolk, during the early hours of Sunday.

Fire at Aberdeenshire landfill site
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to Stoneyhill Quarry on Saturday afternoon, initially mobilising six fire appliances and two specialist resources to the scene.
Four fire appliances remained at the site on Monday morning as firefighters continued to tackle the blaze, assisted by a digger moving waste to help extinguish hotspots.
No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
The site is operated by Stoneyhill Waste Management, under Suez Recycling and Recovery UK.
Valencia landfill site hit by blaze
In a separate incident, firefighters in Suffolk were called to the Masons landfill site, off Bramford Lane in Great Blakenham, at 12.52am on Sunday.
Crews from Elmswell, Bury St Edmunds, Framlingham and Haverhill attended alongside a rescue vehicle and a water carrier after reports of a fire at the landfill.
On arrival, firefighters discovered a number of vehicles alight. Thick, acrid smoke prompted Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service to advise nearby residents to keep doors and windows closed while crews tackled the blaze.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue commented: “A stop to this incident was called at 4:00am.
“The fire was extinguished by four firefighters in breathing apparatus, along with four hose reel jets and two covering jets.
“A site reinspection will take place at 7:00am.”
Valencia Waste Management confirmed to letsrecycle.com last week that the facility is no longer receiving residual waste, alongside six other landfill sites across the UK.
Alongside its seven “open” landfills, it also manages 36 sites across the UK that are currently “either closed, mothballed, or undergoing restoration”.
The closures form part of a wider reduction in landfill capacity in England, with several sites having reached capacity or ceased accepting waste in recent months, resulting in the reported loss of at least one million tonnes of landfill capacity.
