The Careers Fair will debut at the event this year, which takes place at the NEC Birmingham on 16-17 September, and are intended to bring together employers, students, apprentices, graduates, recruiters and education providers to help address skills shortages across the industry.
The Careers Fair
The Careers Fair will provide opportunities for visitors to meet employers, explore apprenticeships, training routes and live vacancies, and learn more about careers in environmental services and the circular economy.
It comes as employers across the environmental sector are eager to attract more young people, career changers, and early-career professionals into positions that support the UK’s sustainability, net zero, and circular economy goals.
Organisations confirmed to take part include Veolia, Suez Recycling and Recovery, Grundon, Groundwork, the Career Transition Partnership and the Climate Ambassadors Programme.
For employers, the Careers Fair aims to aid recruitment, outreach, and early-talent engagement.
More than 20 universities are already promoting the Careers Fair to students and graduates, including the University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University, the University of Warwick, Cardiff University, the University of Leeds and Imperial College London.
Colleges from Birmingham, Coventry and the wider West Midlands are also expected to bring student groups to the event.
Future Talent Hub
Alongside the Careers Fair, the Future Talent Hub, sponsored by Grundon, will host a two-day programme examining workforce development, green skills and recruitment challenges facing the sector.
Sessions will cover topics including the green skills gap, diversity and inclusion, AI literacy, leadership development and employee retention, alongside practical workshops such as CV writing.
Speakers are expected to include representatives from FCC Environment, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the University of the Built Environment and Make UK.
The programme will also feature the return of the 35 Under 35 Awards, recognising emerging talent from across the waste and recycling industry.
Day two of the Future Talent Hub will include a panel on women in waste and recycling, a discussion with Toby Perkins MP on green skills and economic growth, and a workshop exploring how employers can make environmental careers more attractive to future generations.
