Firefighters have been tackling a large blaze involving around 1,000 tonnes of recycling material at a recycling yard in Wolverhampton.

West Midlands Fire Service was called just before 4.25am today (6 July 2026) to reports of a fire at Jones Skips, in Cross Street, Horseley Fields.

The fire is understood to have started at around 5am, with eight fire engines and an aerial platform initially dispatched to the scene.

The fire affected a large shed-like building, recycling materials and machinery within the yard.

Additional resources, including a high volume pumping unit and a second aerial platform, were later sent to support firefighting operations.

By 7.30am, firefighters said they were making good progress in bringing the incident under control.

Site staff have been working alongside firefighters throughout the response, using a mechanical grabber to break up and move the large pile of recycling material.

Crews are continuing to damp down hotspots with two aerial platforms while on-site personnel help move debris to allow remaining pockets of fire to be extinguished.

Jones Skips said in a notice to customers: “The safety of our team, customers and the wider community is our absolute priority, and we would like to thank the emergency services for their swift response.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to resume normal operations as quickly and safely as possible.”

West Midlands Fire Service has advised residents and businesses affected by smoke to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.

A number of road closures remain in place to allow emergency crews to operate safely and accommodate large-diameter hoses connected to the high volume pumping unit.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area, while the City of Wolverhampton Council has implemented diversions on Willenhall Road and Lower Horseley Fields due to partial closures.

Lower Walsall Street has also been closed, with additional partial closures on Hickman Avenue and Commercial Road.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed. Firefighters are expected to remain at the site while damping down operations continue.
