Firefighters have concluded operations at the site of a major landfill fire near Ladybank in Fife, bringing an end to an incident which burned for more than two weeks.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed crews had now left the scene at the Lower Melville Woods Waste Facility after the alarm was first raised at 1.35am on 12 May 2026.

Control of the site has since been handed back to waste management company Cireco, with recovery and remediation work now underway.

At the height of the incident, SFRS mobilised 12 appliances and specialist resources, with more than 60 firefighters involved in efforts to contain the blaze.

The fire involved recycled material and waste spread across an area measuring approximately 200m by 300m. No casualties were reported during the incident.

Area Commander Lee Turnock, the SFRS Local Senior Officer for Clackmannanshire, Fife and Stirling, said: “Following extensive operations over two weeks, firefighters have now concluded work at the site and the incident has been brought to a close.

“Throughout this challenging incident, crews worked tirelessly in difficult conditions to contain the fire and ensure public safety.

“People in the surrounding area may still notice some light smoke or smouldering material at the site for a period of time. However, this is expected following an incident of this nature, and there is no cause for alarm.

“I would like to thank our firefighters, Operations Control personnel, partners, and the local community for their continued support, patience and cooperation while this incident was ongoing.”

‘May be some residual smoke’

Cireco chief executive Robin Baird said the company had now taken over recovery operations, including work to “spread, dampen and cool remaining hot material”.

He added: “There may be some residual smoke or steam visible from parts of the site as this process continues. This is expected and is being carefully managed.

“Cireco has robust arrangements in place to manage the site safely, which have been agreed with SFRS. Trained staff will be present on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week to monitor conditions and respond quickly to any changes.”

The waste facility, including the household recycling centre, will remain closed for several weeks while recovery and remediation work continues.

Fife Council said the closure had caused disruption to some services, including the temporary suspension of bulky uplifts. Customers have been advised to rebook appointments from next week onwards.

Cupar Recycling Centre will continue operating seven days a week until the Ladybank site reopens.

Meanwhile, temporary traffic measures introduced during the incident are being lifted, with the 30mph speed restriction on the A92 due to end at 6pm on Wednesday and the access road reopening the following day.
