The Kraft Heinz Company has become the “first branded food manufacturer” to join Polytag’s Ecotrace programme.

The industry-led initiative uses Polytag’s invisible UV Tag technology to generate data on the lifecycle of single-use plastic packaging.

By applying the tags to its products, Kraft Heinz will be able to track whether packaging is recycled, the volumes recovered, and the waste streams through which materials pass.

An initial pilot phase will focus on selected lines of Heinz Beanz and Heinz Tomato Ketchup, with the ambition to expand the technology across a broader range of products depending on the results.

John Ryan, Director of Packaging for Kraft Heinz’s international markets, commented: “With the help of Polytag’s UV Tag technology, this trial will help Kraft Heinz to access valuable product lifecycle data that will be instrumental in shaping a more sustainable future for plastic packaging.

“Transforming our Heinz squeezy ketchup bottles to become fully recyclable was a big milestone in our packaging journey – improving how we track and trace its journey post-consumption is an important next step, and we’re excited by the possibilities this new partnership will unlock.”

Polytag’s Ecotrace programme

Polytag’s Ecotrace programme is designed to provide, for the first time, barcode-level data at scale on household recycling.

Alice Rackley, CEO of Polytag added: “The Ecotrace Programme represents a monumental effort from our team and industry partners.

“For the first time, we’re able to collect barcode level data at scale on the single-use plastics that UK households put into their recycling bins every day.

“Joining the Ecotrace programme extends Kraft Heinz’s impact beyond their own brand, to supporting the circular economy across the whole of the nation.”

Other brands that Polytag has partnered with include Lucozade Suntory, Waitrose, M&S and Ocado.
