Welsh councils set for 93m in additional recycling funding

The Welsh Assembly has announced 93 million of new funding for local authorities in Wales to improve their recycling and waste management over the next three years.

The funding comes as a continuation of the Sustainable Waste Management Grant in Wales, with which the Assembly hopes to reach a target to recycle 40% of municipal waste by 2009.

”To meet our tough target of recycling and composting 40% of household rubbish in Wales by 2009, we have to make recycling much
easier.“
– Carwyn Jones, Welsh Assembly government

Councils across Wales will receive 26million in 2005-06, 32million in 2006-07, and 35million in 2007-08, the Assembly said today, with environment minister Carwyn Jones saying he wanted the funding to make recycling easier for householders.

Mr Jones said: “Most of us know we should be recycling more of our
rubbish, but if the facilities aren't on our doorstep it can be
tempting to put everything in a black bag for the bin man to take off
to landfill. To meet our tough target of recycling and composting 40%
of household rubbish in Wales by 2009, we have to make recycling much
easier.

Change
The Welsh Assembly minister added: “We are rapidly running out of space in our landfill sites and simply have to change the way we deal with our waste.”

Mr Jones said that most local authorities across Wales had met the 15% target for 2003-04 – nationally, Wales recycled 16.25% of its municipal waste in 2003/04 – but the Assembly minister said he recognised that there was “still more to be done”.

Allocations of funding from the Sustainable Waste Management Grant are based on spending needs, derived from the Standard Spending Assessment, the Assembly said. The full awards were as follows:
