Alupro – the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation – will be working with local authorities, cash for can centres, community recycling projects and fundraisers to ensure that the collection facilities offer the best mix for each area. It hopes that the initiative will persuade residents to recycle their aluminium cans and foil as promotional material will show them how recycling can lead to environmental improvements in their area.
The South West of England will be targeted first and is rolling it out to the North East next month and to the South East in September. The project will cover all eight regions in two years and will run in each area for a 12-month period.
Alex Griffin, Alupro’s operations director, said: “Our army of community recyclers use the value of aluminium for all sorts of good reasons. The new regional programme will be focusing on their activities, and providing the local-benefit angle which shows the public how separating valuable items from the domestic waste-stream is worthwhile, both for local people and the environment.
“We hope that providing the human face of recycling will help local authorities in the drive to persuade the public to take environmental action, and meet the new recycling targets set for each council.”
