Man dies at SITA recycling site

The Health and Safety Executive have launched an investigation after a 21-year-old man died after suffering “serious crush injuries” at a recycling plant operated by SITA Recycling in Tipton, West Midlands.

The incident occurred last Thursday (June 12) morning, when emergency services were called to the site on the Coneygre Industrial Estate in Burnt Tree at 11.20am to find the man had been injured by machinery at the site, but despite the efforts of ambulance staff, he was confirmed dead at the scene.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “On arrival, crews found a man who had suffered serious crush injuries from a large piece of machinery at the recycling unit. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance staff, nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

SITA confirmed: “Last Thursday we had a fatality at our Tipton recycling site in Birmingham, the matter is under investigation by ourselves and the Health and Safety Executive.”

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman explained that, because the circumstances of the death were not suspicious, the case was no longer being handled by them, and had been passed to the coroner.
