Leeds City Council will position the centres within existing household waste sites located at: Pudsey Grangefiled in Pudsey; Holmewell Road in Middleton and Ellar Ghyll in Otley with view to increasing recycling rates across the city as a whole.
One spokesperson from Leeds City Council admitted the selected sites have been chosen due to their poor recycling rates. “Pudsey, Otley and Middleton were selected for the developments after we did an analysis of how well our sites were doing and they were found to be the worst performing. Thus they offered the best scope for improvement,” said the spokeperson.
Leeds City Council hopes to increase its recycling rates from 10.8% in 2001 to 2002 to 22.7% in 2004 to 2005 with the help of these sites.
Funding for the scheme comes from a 4million Government allocation for the development of eight sites under a Local Public Service Agreement – which means that Leeds City Council is allocated additional funding in return for agreeing to meet extra targets to improve its services.
A member of the Council’s Executive Board, which approved the funding scheme, councillor Keith Wakefield said that looking after the environment was one the Council’s main priorities. He said: “We have agreed to set ourselves ambitious targets to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
“Everyone has a part to play, if we are to meet with these targets, and we hope these newly designed centres will make it easier for the whole community to get on board by recycling as much as they possibly can.”
The refurbishment of the household waste sites to include the recycling centres is expected the be completed by completed by March 2003
