Herhof-Umwelttechnik, the German sister company to Herhof UK, was put into administration in March this year because of its financial difficulties. The situation led to Herhof UK losing its status as preferred bidder to build a major new MBT plant in Lancashire (see letsrecycle.com story).
Now former technical executives of the German arm of Herhof, including director Andreas Puchelt, have founded a new engineering company called Waste Tec GmbH, which will specialise in MBT.
MBT is a process combining mechanical separation techniques and composting processes to process mixed waste to recover dry recyclables and a low-grade compost or refuse-derived fuel (RDF).
The new company said it maintains the know-how acquired in the field of MBT technology and the production of RDF from household waste. It said its business areas would include planning, engineering and consulting in all MBT sectors including the
technical improvement of MBT plants in operation.
Waste Tec will initially have a “significant share” of the work completing an MBT plant near Berlin, which is scheduled to begin operations in October 2006. The new company has also been commissioned to upgrade the Dresden MBT plant, built by Herhof in 2001, from a capacity of 85,000 tonnes so it can process up to 105,000 tonnes of waste each year.
