£3m investment for mattress firm which gave X-Factor stars home comforts

One of the UK’s leading online mattress retailers, MattressNextDay, has also increased its workforce by a fifth since the start of the pandemic and is eyeing further growth on the back of the forthcoming investment. It’s exciting times for the firm which has also announced it is working with another organisation to plant trees to be kind to the environment.

Later this year MattressNextDay moves into new headquarters in Whitstable – fully focused on providing consumers with what it believes is the biggest range and stock holding of mattresses for next day delivery in the UK. The firm sells major brands like Silentnight, Sealy, Sleepeezee and Relyon, and during the pandemic estimates average consumer spend increased by 30 per cent, with people willing to invest more money in a reliable, comfortable and long-lasting mattress.

MattressNextDay is the brainchild of Founder and CEO Martin Seeley who has worked within the mattress, bedding and linen trade all his life. Martin spent the formative years of his career working firstly on linen market stalls in London and then within his father Patrick’s independent bedding shop in Clapham, building up extensive knowledge of the trade by doing everything from recommending products, taking orders and delivering goods to customers. His Dad’s business grew and developed over the years with other shops in Tooting and Dulwich, although business was later tested with the recession. Now aged 79, Patrick retired a couple of years ago after a long and successful career.

Around 18 years ago, Martin saw the potential to develop a mattress business online and created MattressNextDay, offering a service to customers guaranteeing next day delivery.

Martin said: “I owe a great deal to my early years working for my Dad – it helped me to build up a wealth of experience which has proved invaluable to this day. I’ve lived and worked with mattresses for so long – they are vital to our health and wellbeing as we spend so much of our lives in bed. “It means I can ask people with confidence to name whatever budget they are working with and I will find the best mattress for them, to suit their lifestyle and circumstances.”

Martin stays at the top of his game in terms of learning about the latest technology and industry developments with his team of proud industry experts visiting trade shows such as the NBF’s Bed Show and the Birmingham Show every year. He says many high end brands will be attracted by the firm’s decision to open a showroom alongside the new warehouse for stock to be showcased to visiting customers.

In 2014, TV producers for the X-Factor hit talent show contacted MattressNextDay to ask if it could provide mattresses for the audition houses of some of its contestants. After successfully responding to the call at short notice, the firm was allowed to auction the very mattresses used by pop star Fleur East and fellow contestants after the series aired. MattressNextDayhas also supplied mattresses to the cast of reality show Geordie Shore.

MattressNextDay is currently working with global environmental organisation, Ecologi as part of an exciting ‘green’ initiative. MattressNextDay has committed to planting one million trees by 2030. As part of this effort, the online mattress retailer will plant a tree for every online order, and has become an official Climate Positive Workforce, committing to plant over 500 trees per month to help offset its workforce’s carbon footprint.
