The purpose-built household waste and recycling centre (HWRC) was opened this month by the company at Brymbo, north-west of Wrexham.

The facility forms an important part of WRG's PFI contract with the council which was signed in May 2007. The contract will also see WRG opening a materials recovery facility and composting facility on the Wrexham Industrial Estate in the summer, and refurbishing the Plas Madoc household recycling centre, seven miles south of Wrexham, by September (see letsrecycle.com story).

David Rees, general manager for WRG, said: “The redevelopment of Brymbo's household waste recycling centre is a further step forward in the provision of a range of exciting new facilities that will secure for Wrexham a more sustainable future for waste and resource management.

“We're really looking forward to working with the people of Wrexham to boost recycling rates still further by offering modern and convenient facilities at Brymbo,” he added.

A spokesman for WRG said the facility has improved recycling facilities made access easier for residents and they can recycle newspapers, magazines, plastic and glass bottles, cans, clothing as well as wood, cardboard, rubble, scrap, garden waste, batteries, oil and white goods. The site will be open all year – apart from Christmas Day.

Wrexham's Mayor, Cllr David Griffiths, who officially opened the recycling centre, said: “It is a pleasure to be here to open this much awaited facility. I know the old site was very busy and I have no doubts that this new and modern recycling centre will be just as popular.

“Recycling rates are up and residents can now look forward to increasing their recycling rates by using a safer and cleaner site,” he added.
