WRAP launches an interactive map of wood recyclers

WRAP has launched a web based map to connect wood waste producers with the wood recycling industry.

The website has been produced by WRAP with the support of the Wood Recyclers Association (WRA) and the Wood Panel Industries Federation. Producers of both commercial and post consumer wood waste can enter a post code into the system and the service will locate and name the nearest collections and recyclers and give information about services.

400 collection and recycling facilities have already been included in the site. Wood recyclers and household waste sites with wood collection facilities are able to register free of charge on the site, giving details of their opening hours, activities, services and location.

Michael Tracey, of Tracey Timber Recycling Ltd and chairman of the WRA, said: “All wood recyclers should be delighted with this latest WRAP initiative which pits a huge potential customer base in contact with us, literally at the touch of a button. WRA member companies are grateful to WRAP for creating a series of opportunities for wood recyclers to expand the industry and divert more wood waste away from landfill.”

Of the 2 million tonnes of post consumer wood waste produced in the UK each year 800,000 tonnes are recycled, mostly into panelboard. The web site also gives details of the recycled wood products and their manufacturers.

“We anticipate that this new resource will help to significantly increase wood waste recycling in the UK,” said Tom Fourcade, head of WRAP's wood recycling programme. “WRAP has already identified more than 400 sites across the UK for wood waste collection or recycling, and the information on the website will put producers of wood waste, such as furniture manufacturers, in contact with recyclers quickly and easily.”

The free information service and map is available at recyclewood.org.uk
. Users will need an Adobe SVG Viewer to use the map but the site has a link to download the required software.
