A spokesman for the organisations explained that WRAP is implementing a programme “to develop and promote industry standards for composted products which, meet the needs of end users, create confidence in their use, improve production methods and increase opportunities to market the end products.”
This programme has already completed some key tasks including: the establishment of a compost standards business review group, an review of international compost standards, the commissioning of an adjudication committee and the recruitment of two standards compliance officers who have been seconded to the Composting Association.
Conversion
The Composting Association, which was already developing a standard for composted materials, has been working closely with WRAP since the outset of of the programme.
Following talks with the Composting Association and other stakeholders it was agreed that the conversion to a BSI – PAS (Publicly Available Specification) of the existing Composting Association Standard was the preferred method of increasing industry compliance with standards for composted materials. Consequently, WRAP awarded a contract to BSI (which is the modern version of the British Standards Institute) to develop such a PAS and the Composting Association is working closely with BSI to achieve this.
The Composting Association says that interest from compost producers is increasing in recognition that “standards for quality and consistency will be beneficial to the industry”.
Further information about standards for composts should contact Lee Best or Claire Ellam at the Composting Association.
