Viridor and Roseberry chiefs appointed to government committee

New appointments announced today to the influential Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment (ACBE) include two members of the waste and recycling industry. Colin Drummond, chief executive of waste management company Viridor and Paul Morgan, managing director of Tees Valley-based Roseberry Recycling Ltd will join WRAP chairman Vic Cocker on the 20-member committee.

Mr Drummond said: “I am delighted to be appointed to the committee. I think waste and related environmental issues are an important area of work for ACBE.”

The inclusion of Mr Drummond on the committee is seen as bringing forward a key figure from the waste sector who has also experience of water and technical matters. Mr Drummond is also a main board director of Viridor's parent company the Pennon Group which owns South West Water. And, he is a member of the CBI’s environmental affairs committee and South West Regional Council. He holds an MA from Oxford University and an MBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

Mr Morgan said: “I am looking forward to representing the smaller business and recycling and waste sectors while at the same time contributing to wider environmental issues.”

Mr Morgan is also a member of the Small Business Council, a public body advising the Secretary of State for Trade & Industry on small business issues. The pair join WRAP chairman Vic Cocker who is already serving on the committee.

Emissions trading

Environment Minister Michael Meacher said: “ACBE has played a key role in the development of major initiatives such as emissions trading and the establishment of the Carbon Trust. It has also produced clear and thought provoking briefing for businesses. I wish to express my thanks to outgoing members for their contribution to the work of the committee. We now look forward to its future work, particularly on issues such as resource productivity and climate change adaptation.”
