SITA wins Bracknell Forest refuse and recycling work

Bracknell Forest’s refuse collection and recycling contract in Berkshire has been awarded to SITA, the waste management company that already holds the town’s street cleansing and waste disposal contracts.

The borough council awarded the five year contract, worth 1.3 million per annum, to SITA after a competitive tendering process. SITA will take over the town’s refuse collection and recycling service on 1 August from Cleanaway.

Once a week SITA will collect waste from the town’s 44,000 homes, and every two weeks collect recyclable materials. Currently, 1,800 tonnes of paper and 155 tonnes of cans are collected for recycling in Bracknell. The contract with SITA should help the council to double the amount of waste collected recycling by 2003.

As part of the contract, SITA will introduce new environmentally- friendly vehicles, run on low sulphur fuels, to collect household waste. And for
collections in some of the town’s narrower streets, SITA will also introduce narrow body and centre steer vehicles.

SITA’s achievement in winning the refuse and recycling contract follows its equally successful extension for the street cleansing contract. The latter, held by SITA for the last six years, was recently extended for five years. This follows Bracknell Forest Council receiving a Beacon award for maintaining a quality environment.

Dave Foster, SITA’s Regional Director, was delighted at the award of the refuse and recycling contract. He said: “We are proud of our success in Bracknell. SITA already provides street cleansing and waste disposal services, the refuse collection and recycling contract completes a trio of waste management contracts. We are determined to offer a value for money service and, working with the council, it is our intention to improve recycling rates.”

A spokesperson for Bracknell Forest Borough Council said: “We are delighted to be able to extend our working relationship with SITA. We look forward to further developing the service and introducing new initiatives in the true spirit of partnership and in the best interests of our residents.”
