The mail was sent to numerous landscaping businesses last year to highlight the effectiveness of recycled wood in retaining moisture and deterring weeds in plant beds.
It was part of WRAP's ongoing drive to expand markets for recycled materials.
Scotts have now bought 7,500 tonnes of recycled woodchip from palettes recycled at Giffords in West Bromwich, to be dyed black and sold to garden centres. It hopes to extend the order further if the mulch, launched in February, is a success.
Karen Barber, category manager for growing media at the Scotts Company said: “Having first learned about the potential of recycled woodchip as a garden mulch we were keen to offer the product to our customers.
“To date the material has sold well and we anticipate this continuing, particularly as news of its effectiveness spreads by word of mouth among the nation's gardeners.”
Versatile
Scotts, which has its UK office in Godalming, Surrey, said that recycled wood is especially suitable for mulch because it is drier and harder than virgin wood, and so lasts longer and can absorb dye more easily.
An increasing demand in environmentally-friendly products also contributed to their choice of recycled material.

Julia Turner, material development manager for wood at WRAP, said: “It's great to see that all the work to promote recycled woodchip as a landscaping surfacing product is having a positive effect, not only with the trade audience but now with a major consumer-facing brand.
“Recycled woodchip is a highly versatile and effective mulch and this will no doubt be found to be the case as more and more people use the product on their gardens.”
