Police investigating after baby’s body found at Amey site

Police have launched an investigation after the body of a newborn baby boy was discovered at Amey’s waste management park in Waterbeach, about three miles north of Cambridge.

South Wales Police say they were called to Fenestration Recycling Company Ltd in Neath Abbey on the morning of 24 January (picture: Shutterstock)

Cambridge Constabulary say officers were called to the site in Ely Road at noon on 29 November, just after the discovery of the boy was made.

A spokesperson for Amey confirmed to letsrecycle.com that the emergency services were called to their facility on Tuesday. However, they declined to comment further, “whilst the police are carrying out their investigation.”

Police are appealing for anyone with any information to get in touch and say they are “keeping an open mind” as to the circumstances.

‘Sad and upsetting’

Detective superintendent John Massey from Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “This is an incredibly sad and upsetting incident for everyone involved and we are in the process of trying to establish more details about what has happened.

“We would like to make a direct appeal to the baby boy’s mother to get in touch with us – it may be she needs medical care or is in a vulnerable situation.

“We are trying our hardest to get to the bottom of what has taken place, but we cannot do that alone, so I would also appeal to the public for their help.

“Any information, no matter how small, could help the investigation run by our specialist child safeguarding team, even if that is given anonymously to us or Crimestoppers.”

Anyone with information is urged to pass it to the force online via Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s major incident public portal here.

Cambridgeshire

Amey has a long-term partnership with Cambridgeshire county council, delivering a £731 million, 28-year waste processing and recycling contract.

Through the contract, Amey operates several waste technologies to deal with residents’ household waste at the Waterbeach site, including a mechanical biological treatment plant, an in-vessel composting facility, a materials recycling facility and a landfill.

Amey also operates three waste transfer stations at Waterbeach, Alconbury and March and manages the operation of nine household waste recycling centres across Cambridgeshire.
