The firm has installed he MERR100 baler at its recycling depot in Hurn, Christchurch, making it easier to bale and recycle hard plastics such as PP, PE and PVC waste that have traditionally been landfilled.

The baler delivers a press force of 100 tonnes to produce high quality, compact and dense bales, and enables W&S to achieve between 19 and 20 tonnes a load compared to 3 tonnes a load when transporting loose material.

Andy Tyers, operations manager for W&S Recycling, said: “Diverting rigid plastics from landfill is an obvious next step for us as we expand our operations and capabilities.

“It’s a commodity that has been traditionally hard to deal with partly because of the number of mixed polymers involved, quality of product and sheer bulk of the material. The new baler will make the product far easier to deal with.”

Grundon vehicles get bin-weighing technology

Waste management firm Grundon has installed ENVIROWEIGH bin-weighing systems in 50 of its trade waste collection vehicles, with more to follow.

The system, owned by Vehicle Weighing Solutions Ltd (VWS), can be used for ‘pay for weight’ services and installed onto all makes and models of vehicles with potential bin tag and chip technology.

The vehicles are a mixture of FEL’s and trade waste, which range from 32-tonne FEL on Volvo chassis to 15-26 tonne trade waste on DAF chassis.

Grundon’s fleet manager, Stephen Townsend, said the bin-weighing equipment was now a stipulation of many of its customers in tender specifications.

As part of the Grundon contract, VWS worked with the Heil factory to engineer fitting load cells on to the forks of four Euro half pack front end loaders, for which the company built a 45ft testing ramp to ensure the equipment functioned correctly.

Julian Glasspole, managing director at VWS said: “We are delighted that Grundon have chosen us as their weighing partner. Feedback from the marketplace is showing our system to be the most reliable, adaptable and accurate bin-weighing system available.”

The DW 3060K shredder is capable of handling waste wood, mixed construction waste and industrial refuse, with a 3-metre wide roller which rotates at 31RPM. It will be used to service two sites processing in the region of 50,000 tonnes of green waste per year.

Meanwhile, the SM 620K will be based at Tamar’s Tempsford facility, screening around 35,000 tonnes of green waste per year. The machine comes equipped with a trommel screening drum and interior helix, and can separate domestic and green waste, waste wood and consutrction waste.

Tamar Organics’ divisional manager Andy Sibley said: “These machines have impressed us with their low running costs and reliability and Blue Machinery’s parts and service back-up is excellent, knowledgeable and timely.”

Yotta Mayrise software targets Walsall flytipping

Walsall council is introducing mobile waste management software from Yotta Mayrise to tackle the growing problem of flytipping in the borough.

Collection crews can access the Mayrise software with in-cab devices or tablet PCs which automatically record the location of the illegally dumped waste, complete with GPS coordinates. From there, the council can decide what action needs to be required.

Integrated with the local authority’s website and customer contact centre, it combines back office and field solutions to target problem areas and provide detailed financial reporting.

Walsall council’s Stephen Johnson, service manager clean and green, said: “With the introduction of Mayrise mobile solution, we are hoping to build on this success and improve our KPI results in relation to fly tipping.”
