Pennon Group listed as CDP climate leader

The parent company of a major waste management firm has for the first time been featured in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index for disclosing information regarding its record on climate change.

Viridor's portfolio of upcoming energy from waste projects is likely to yield financial benefits

Pennon Group, parent company of Viridor, was listed by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) in the index, which provides an evaluation tool for institutional investors and other stakeholders.

A key component of the CDPs annual FTSE 350 report, companies are scored on their climate change disclosure with high scores indicating good internal data management and an understanding of how related environmental issues affect them.

In 2013, 41 companies from the FTSE 350 were included in the index, based on analysis of their responses to CDPs questionnaire focusing on greenhouse gas emissions, the risks and opportunities associated with climate change, and emission reduction targets. Pennon Group was graded A- in the performance band.

Proud

Gill Rider, chair of Pennon Groups sustainability committee, said: “As one of the largest environmental and resource management groups in the UK, Pennon’s business is all about sustainability. We are committed to leading the way in good environmental practice, both in how we operate, in reducing our carbon emissions and in transparently recording and reporting our energy use.

“We’re very proud that this commendation puts us top amongst the listed water companies for both transparency and carbon reduction, but that is only half the story. Viridor, a complex national business, has made great strides in measuring, reporting and reducing its carbon use.”

Ian McAulay, chief executive officer of Viridor and board member of Pennon Group, added: Viridors determination to be acknowledged as a sustainable business ready for the low carbon economy of the future is now justifiably recognised by this well respected index.
